Kanpur Zoo is a government organization and is controlled by the Forest Department, State Government of Uttar Pradesh.The Central zoo Authority of India, which is a statutory body under Central Government formulates various guiding principles and issues registration for the zoos.Kanpur Zoo is categorized as large Zoo and is accorded registration up to 30th June, 2012. 

                                                      Kanpur Zoological Park situated on the fringes of industrial city of Kanpur. The park is spread in an area of 76.65 hectare. It opened for public on 4th February 1974.

Allen forest was developed during the British rule between the years 1913-1918 by Mr. George Burney Allen, a famous British industrialist of Kanpur on the banks of the river Ganga.

The construction of the zoo was carried between 1971 to 1973.The 1st animal that came to the zoo was an Otter, which was caught by fisherman from the river Chambal.

The enclosures for animals and birds were designed on the latest trends in the field of zoo building technology, well spread along the lake on either side of a semicircular arterial road of about 9 km. length.

Many endangered and exotic species successfully bred here.To name a few One Horned Rhinoceros, Thamin, Swamp deer, Chimpanzee, Orangutan, Zebra etc.,

about the city Nestled on the banks of the eternal Ganga, Kanpur stands as one of North India’s major industrial centres with its own historical, religious and commercial importance. Believed to be founded by king Hindu Singh of the erstwhile state of Sachendi, Kanpur was originally known as `Kanhpur’. Upto the 1st half of the 18th century Kanpur continued to survive as an insignificant village. Its fate, however, took a new turn soon after. In May 1765, Shuja-ud-daula, the Nawab Wazir of Awadh, was defeated by the British near Jajmau. It was probably at this time that strategic importance of the city of Kanpur was realized by the British. European businessmen had by this time gradually started establishing themselves in Kanpur. In order to ensure protection to their lives and property the `Awadh local forces’ were shifted here in 1778.
